PRIVATE ENTERPRISE

Talk given September 12 to the Rotary Club of Heidelberg

Full copy available as downloadable PDF

Every now and again one needs to offer a perspective on the merits of the cause one promotes. When I was invited to talk to Heidelberg Rotary, I thought that provided a good opportunity to do so and I agreed to their request to talk about private enterprise. The attached touches on various aspects, albeit too briefly.

The reaction from a small audience seemed favourable and questioning/discussion continued for some time after the formal close and many copies of the text (as per the attached) were requested.

Questions raised covered a surprisingly wide area. They included problems in Europe (my response: unless the Euro is abandoned there will be ongoing crises); US debt (my response: the Federal Reserve has to accept a good part of the blame for allowing excessive private debt, which will take some time to unwind and return the US economy to better health); immigration (my response: more government controls/supervision needed, particularly in regard to possible Islamic extremists); the next big ice age is coming but will not occur for thousands of years and in the meantime we can expect high temperatures (my response: in between big ice ages many variations in temperatures occur, including small ice ages such as the one that hit Napoleon when he invaded Russia).
