Critique of the IPCC’s Summary for Policy Makers Seminar presented 9 October 2013 to the Economic Society of Victoria. Today I presented the attached critique of the IPCC’s Summary for Policy Makers (published on 27 September) to a seminar at the Economic Society of Victoria. The seminar was chaired by the current President of the Society, Professor Rodney Maddock and attended by about 20. Professor Maddock indicated at the outset that he had experienced some resistance to holding a seminar on “IPCC claims are proven false?” but had taken the view that the Society should be prepared to have open discussions/debate on economic issues of public interest. Des Moore 9 October 2013 IPCC Claims Are Proved False Speech presented 19 September 2013 to the Australian Club. “Why Global Warming Does Not Threaten Dangerous Temperatures”. The text and graphs presented here dismiss a number of the claims and calculations made by the IPCC, the climate research bodies and the weather agencies. Of particular importance is the demonstration, firstly, that the method of calculating daily temperatures by weather agencies both here and overseas has resulted in overstating the increase in temperatures over the last 100 years or so by around 0.3-0.4 of a degree. Secondly, analysis of the increase of 0.4 of a degree in temperatures in the period from 1977-98 shows that this was due to natural causes. What this suggests is that none of the increase of 0.8 of a degree over the last 100 years was due to emissions of fossil fuels and that government actions to reduce their usage should be stopped asap. Des Moore 19 September 2013 Economic, Climate & Religious Challenges – How Serious? Speech presented 23 November 2011 to the Australian Club. Crisis, crisis, crisis - almost everywhere we turn there is said to be a crisis. But does this mean we are seriously threatened by some event that we cannot avoid and, if so, what is the extent of damage that might occur to our lives? Or can we take action to prevent or limit that damage? Today there are supposed serious threats to our economic well-being and even our very existence. First, from a major slow-down in economic growth or even a 1930s- type recession. Second, from a warming in temperatures that if not stopped quickly could eventually eliminate mankind. Third, from a group which seeks to either convert us to its religion or to eliminate those of us unwilling to accept that. Des Moore 23 November 2011 Private Enterprise This is the talk I gave today to an audience of over 100 at Port Phillip Probus, whose members come from a wide range of suburbs. It includes a good deal of what you have previously seen from earlier talks I have given on the subject of private enterprise. However, I have outlined the downwards revisions to economic forecasts and added comments on the appalling failure of the G20 to recognise that the focus on policies to improve growth and financial stability should not be on creating increased access to financial resources (such as via the IMF) but on policies that encourage risk taking in the private sector and reduce government intervention. Des Moore 8 November 2011 Private Enterprise This is a talk on Private Enterprise I gave to Kew Rotary. This is similar to the talk I gave about 5 weeks ago to Heidleberg Rotary but is updated to take account of some recent developments. Des Moore 21 October 2011 Private Enterprise Every now and again one needs to offer a perspective on the merits of the cause one promotes. When I was invited to talk to Heidelberg Rotary, I thought that provided a good opportunity to do so and I agreed to their request to talk about private enterprise. The attached touches on various aspects, albeit too briefly. Des Moore 12 September 2011 How Fair is Fair Work Australia? The above links to a paper I presented on April 2 on ”Employee and Employer Rights and FWA regulations” at the HR Nicholls conference on How Fair is Fair Work Australia. Des Moore 2 April 2011 Why No Dangerous Rise in Temperatures Threatens A talk given today to a University of Third Age group in Orrong Rd. With the help of graphs (also attached) composed by Tom Quirk and (earlier) by Bill Kininmonth, the document updates the arguments and data that reject the dangerous warming thesis. Contrary to Garnaut, it is clear that developments since his report of 2008 considerably weaken the case of the believers in the dangerous warming threat. Des Moore 28 March 2011 Interview with Alan Jones on 2GB on 5 July on Islamic Extremism Transcript of a radio interview with Alan Jones that took place in 2GB studios on 5 July 2010 on the subject of Islamic Extremism. Alan and Des suggest that the development of an extremist Islamic set is a serious threat to Australia as well as overseas. Full transcript of this interview available as a downloadable PDF. Des Moore 5 July 2010 The Threat from Islamic Extremism – Can Governments Handle It? Transcript of the presentation to a branch of the University of the Third Age on “The Threat from Islamic Extremism – Can Governments Handle It?” It suggests that the world has moved into a new environment in which sections of Islam are seeking to overthrow western dominance by means that should produce a response at both international and domestic levels that extends to cultural as well as military levels. But in regard to homegrown terrorist threats, the presentation questions the adequacy of the response so far by the US, UK and Australian governments. Proposals are advanced for improving the responses. Des Moore 22 March 2010 Islam In Australia Transcript of the presentation to the Probus Society spelling out the realities that must be faced if we are to reduce the risk of terrorist attacks within Australia. Des Moore 23 February 2010 Why No Dangerous Rise in Temperatures Threatens Transcript of the presentation to the Queensland Economic Society on the changing perspective on climate change as the scientific 'consensus' is re-examined Des Moore 17 February 2010 Global Warming and Uncertainty – What is the appropriate response? In this presentation Des Moore argues, based on a national interest test, that the uncertainties about mainstream climate science and the extent of dissent are so large that they rule out any application of the so-called precautionary principle. He also argues that even if it were accepted that temperatures will increase over time, the large uncertainties about the timing and extent of the alleged mitigating action said to be needed suggests that no case exists for governments to start a comprehensive program now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Address to the Economic Society in Melbourne 2 October 2009 Karoly - Finding the Fingerprints Note on File, 21 August 2009 In this document Des Moore reflects on the style, attitude and substance of David Karoly as presonally experienced during his public lecture at Melbournce University titled "Distinguishing the Causes of Climate Change" delivered on August 21. Some Observations on Government Policies, including on Global Warming & Defence The Liberal Party has many opportunities to pursue the objectives for which it is supposed to stand and to differentiate itself from the Labor Party. Des Moore is concerned that, even though appropriate policies may be consistent with liberal beliefs, there seems to be a fear within the Liberal party that too much differentiation is politically risky. He submits that fear is something to be overcome, not to succumb to. Address to the Portsea Liberal Party, 25 May 2009 Global Warming: Who Are The Scaredy Cats? Some say we live in “interesting times”: my feeling is they are fearful rather than interesting because of the danger that major governments could act on another scare started by some scientists who have persuaded ministers on both sides of politics that their doom-laden analysis is correct. I say “another” because a long record already exists of scientists starting false scares and persuading politicians to intervene. But more of that record shortly... Des Moore compares the scientific evidence with the scaremongering prevalent in the Climate Change debate. Address to the Probus Heroes Club, 24 February 2009 Global Warming – Is it Really a Threat? This address examined various arguments and claims made in support of the thesis that increasing human activity is the principal cause of increased global temperatures and that urgent government action needs to be taken to reduce (in particular) CO2 emissions. It concluded that the case has not been made and that many scientists now reject the thesis or do not accept it as providing a basis for such action. It notes that the essence of the thesis - that the increasing CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere lead inevitably to damaging increases in temperatures - is contrary to analysis showing that warming effects from increasing concentrations diminish progressively and are now very small. This analysis is generally accepted by scientists and also in the reports of the Intergovernment Panel on Climate Change.
